Dr. Tewel received his undergraduate degree from Miami University(Ohio) and his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He served two years as a Navy Medical Officer assigned to the United States Marine Corps, and then he returned for his Residency at the Indiana University Medical Center. Dr. Tewel had his own private ophthalmology practice for 20 years in Ludington, Michigan prior to coming to Bloomington in 1994.
Dr. Tewel is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and a career member of the American Medical Association.
Outside of his love for medicine, he is an avid fly fisherman and loves to fish the rivers and streams of Wyoming and Montana. He is a long-time runner and is a four-time Boston Marathon finisher. Most importantly, he has been married to his wife, Brenda, for over 40 years, and they have two married daughters and four grandsons.
